FAQ
- Is it dangerous to hike in the mountains?
-
The mountain is a beautiful but unprotected environment. Many people get injured in the Alps if they don’t know what they are doing, or they underestimate the risks of wild nature. Booking a hike with Trekking Alps you will have a certified local guide and this will definitely protect you from most of the common mistakes you might do, but still you need to know that Zero Risk does not exist. The only animal that can harm you is the Viper, but the most dangerous is definitely falling from cliffs or thunderstorms.
- Is this hike safe all year round?
-
No. Every hike must be considered carefully. In general, the safest period, when the snow is gone from the high passes, is usually August. That said, having a snow thunderstorm in August is not impossible. So, every hike must be carefully evaluated. Booking with Trekking Alps, you can be sure that the adventure booked is doable with reasonable security levels, and in case the conditions are not secure, there will be some other option avaiable for you.
- When is the best time to do the Hut to Hut Gran Paradiso Hike?
-
If you are fit and you are not afraid of snow July is amazing as it has the greenest time and the waterfalls are usually at its best. If you want to be sure that the passes are without snow choose the August one. In September the nice thing is that you will not meet many hikers and the light is usually very beautiful. So, there is not the best time… it depends on what type of hiker are you.
- What sort of terrain should I expect in this tour?
-
The Gran Paradiso hut-to-hut takes place in a remote mountain environment. We follow paths that go above 3000 meters. So very rocky and near glaciers. In lower elevation, the paths are very well marked but pretty steep and never boring. In general, the situation at the mountain passes is always carefully checked by us so that we can go on safely. The last day in particular, going down the Col Fenetre is often not possible, and there is an alternative.
- How many people you take on this tour?
-
The Hut to Hut Gran Paradiso is our most sold trek, so we do it every week for the whole summer. Usually, the base of the tour is 10, and this is usually the number you will hike with. Extraordinarily, it can be that there are a few more people. But also less. It depends:)
- Do I need a guide?
-
It depends on your experience in the mountains. This hike is located in a wild area, and you have to know the hazards and how to react. The guides will also help you to put the cultural context, organize the tour properly, and determine if there are any critical conditions that might be dangerous.
- Would the group go slow or fast?
-
It depends. The group, being a group, moves normally together. But the guides are pretty flexible in leaving everyone to enjoy his/her speed if it is considered safe, given that no one will be left behind. There are also extra hikes every day that the more fit people can do, while the rest of the group can enjoy a cold beer playing cards at the hut.
